Gender Sensitive Journalism in Ukraine - Covering Violence in the Media
This course covers basic knowledge for journalists and bloggers in Ukraine about gender stereotypes and violence and how to avoid writing gender-biased stories.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course provides a basic understanding of what gender is, gender stereotypes, and how to avoid gender-biased text. Also in the course, you will learn how to cover violence in the media and blogs - from understanding what kinds of violence exist to the language of its coverage: the terms and words that should and should not be written when describing cases of gender-based violence. Also, an important part of the course is a module on how to talk to survivors of violence: how to interview, and what are the ethics of communication. The course is recommended for practicing and beginning journalists and bloggers, teachers and students of journalism at universities in Central Asia. It can be used for professional development by practicing journalists, editors and teachers.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
What is gender, what stereotypes are associated with different genders, and why they should be avoided?
How to avoid using gender stereotypes in materials.
Types of violence and how to explain them to readers.
What language can and cannot be used in the coverage of gender-based violence.
The importance of women's representation in the media not only as subjects of stories on violence, but also as experts and analysts.
COURSE PROGRAMME
Module 1
In this module, you will learn the basic terms that are necessary when applying a gender-sensitive approach to journalism.
Module 2
In this section you will learn about what gender stereotypes are and how they are formed, as well as how to avoid using stereotypes in materials.
Module 3
Introduction. Portrait of a women in the media. The role of the journalist and editorial staff in covering the topic of violence in the media.
Module 4
What is violence. Why is it important for journalists to distinguish between different types of violence? The legal framework.
Module 5
The appropriate terminology.
Module 6
Principles that are important to keep in mind when reporting on violence.
Module 7
How to communicate with survivors of violence: interview principles and communication ethics.
Final test
Final test 9 questions 10 minutes.
